Gabon: Protect LGBT+ people against criminalization

Sign to prevent LGBT+ lives from being criminalized again in Gabon

Gabon is at a crossroads following the coup of 2023 and the establishment of the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI). As the country embarks on a rebuilding process, legitimate concerns are emerging regarding the protection of LGBT+ people's rights.

Law n°006/2020, adopted in June 2020, had marked significant progress by decriminalizing homosexuality in Gabon. However, recent national dialogue has revealed intentions to turn back the clock, influenced by religious leaders and anti-gender rhetoric. This could lead to the repeal of this progressive law, leaving LGBT+ people vulnerable.

It is crucial we protect these basic human rights and ensure the safety of LGBT+ people.

Time is running out. Decisions taken now will shape the future of LGBT+ rights in Gabon. We must act before it's too late.

Join us in this fight for the rights of LGBT+ people in Gabon. Together, we can influence the outcome of the national dialogue and ensure that sexual orientation and gender identity are never criminalized.

Your signature can send a powerful message to Gabon's decision-makers, reminding them of the importance of preserving the rights of all citizens, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI) :

We, the signatories of this petition, call on the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI) to respect and protect the rights of LGBT+ people in Gabon.

Law n°006/2020, adopted in June 2020, marked a historic step forward by decriminalizing homosexuality. However, recent discussions and resolutions from the national dialogue raise concerns about the continued protection of these rights.

The growing influence of religious leaders and the rise of anti-gay rhetoric have led to proposals to repeal the law. If this repeal were to materialize, it would expose LGBT+ people to arbitrary arrest and prison sentences, erasing the progress made in human rights.

We urge you to maintain the decriminalization of homosexuality and to integrate the values of diversity and inclusion into Gabon's new Constitution. It is crucial that Gabon continues to honor its international commitments and promote human rights without discrimination.
