Following the publication of former President Yayi Boni's book, an anti-LGBT+ movement emerged that endangered the lives of LGBT+ people in Benin.
In response to a question about homosexuality in animals, former Benin president and Democratic Party chairman Dr. Boni Yayi said, "I would like to talk to you about homosexuality." Boni Yayi posted anti-LGBT+ comments on his Facebook page, supported by Bible verses condemning same-sex intercourse.
Worse, the former president of Benin concludes his message by firmly calling for anti-LGBT+ campaigns and urging people to be unyielding toward the LGBT+ community.
Benin's LGBT+ community is an important part of the country's youth and is often exposed to various attacks. Despite the fact that they are citizens, enjoy constitutional rights, and are protected by human rights conventions, the Beninese government, led by President Patrice Talon, has never made any decision or statement in favor of the community.
In this context, it is imperative that the authorities in Benin act immediately to guarantee the constitutional rights of LGBT+ people and hold former President Boni Yayi accountable.
