Many couples in Bulgaria find themselves in a legal vacuum because they are married on one side of the border and have no legal relationship on the other side - on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria. 

On 05. September 2023, the European Court of Human Rights ruled in favour of the couple, obliging Bulgaria to create a legal framework to recognize same-sex relationships.

This means, thanks to these brave women, all member states of the Council of Europe, are obliged to establish a legal framework regulating the family relations of same-sex couples! 

But Bulgaria has a bad track record of implementing these decisions.
