China: Stop erasing LGBT+ stories

Every love story deserves to be seen. Stand with us to demand that Chinese distributors stop censoring LGBT+ lives.

Love should never be rewritten.

When audiences in China watched the Australian film Together, they were shocked. A same-sex couple had been digitally erased – a man’s face replaced with a woman’s, turning them into a straight couple.

This is more than censorship. It is distortion and erasure of LGBT+ people. It tells LGBT+ people everywhere that their stories, their love, can be deleted.

The film’s global distributor has spoken out, condemning the unauthorised edit and demanding that the altered version be pulled from cinemas. But without extra pressure, China’s film distributors may continue to rewrite LGBT+ lives on screen.

Film and art give LGBT+ people recognition, hope, and dignity. Altering those stories spreads shame and fear, and denies millions of people the chance to see themselves represented.

By signing this petition, you join a global call demanding that Chinese distributors stop erasing LGBT+ content and respect artistic integrity. Together, we can send a clear message: the world is watching, and love in all its forms cannot be censored.

To Chinese film distributor Hishow:

We are writing to express our outrage at the unauthorised alteration of the Australian film Together. The decision to digitally replace a gay couple with a straight couple erases LGBT+ lives, distorts artistic work, and fuels harmful stigma.

Such censorship is not only a violation of artistic integrity, but also a direct attack on the dignity of LGBT+ people everywhere. By rewriting love stories to fit discriminatory standards, you send a dangerous message that LGBT+ people are not worthy of recognition or respect.

We demand that you:

Immediately cease distribution of the altered version of Together.
Respect artistic integrity and the rights of LGBT+ people to be represented on screen.
