“Too gay, too black”: AfD refuses to appoint medical officer

City Council officer of right-wing party in Berlin refuses to appoint Dr. Hedeler as medical officer until he changes his "public image"

"You don't fit in here" - with this explanation, my application for the position of Chief Medical Officer in the Berlin district of Treptow-Koepenick was rejected by Health City Councilor Bernd Geschanowski (AfD). While he was saying this, he pointed to his skin. He recommended that I "change my public image".

A while before the former senior public health officer Andreas von Welczeck retired, he appointed me as his deputy. However, my application for his succession was ignored.

This means, that despite the ongoing pandemic, the position of  Chief Medical Officer is still vacant today.

There is no reason to reject my application. With my many years of experience at the Bremen Health Office, at "Doctors without Borders" and my work to contain the Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone in 2014, my references in disease control are excellent.

What really bothers the AfD party, is my skin color and sexual orientation.

I was born in Cuba and am married to a man. That is why they want to prevent my appointment as Chief Medical Officer for Treptow-Koepenick - because I am gay and black.

To Michael Müller, Mayor of Berlin & Oliver Igel, District Mayor of Treptow-Koepenick::

The German Constitution (Grundgesetz) guarantees protection against discrimination.

Dr. Hedeler was discriminated against, because of his skin colour and sexual orientation by AfD’s Health City Councilor Bernd Geschanowski.

We demand an immediate criminal investigation of the matter!
