U.S. Must Reject This Bill: It Won't Protect Kids, Just Cens

The misleadingly titled Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) would allow Republican state attorneys general to censor content on the internet made by, for, or about LGBTQ people.

A bill is currently working its way through the U.S. Senate which, if passed, could be used to censor LGBT+ content on the internet. Despite Democrats' pledges to support and protect LGBT+ people from legislative attacks that are happening across the states, this bill has bipartisan support, and President Biden has indicated he would sign it.

The Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) is a misleadingly titled bill that would empower state attorneys general to censor content on the internet if they believe it is harmful to children. While this is ostensibly meant to target content such as pornography, Republicans have been clear that they would use such a law to ban or restrict content by or about LGBT+ people.

Earlier this month, Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), one of the co-sponsors of KOSA, told the right-wing Family Policy Alliance that the bill would protect “minor children from the transgender in this culture.” It's clear this bill has the same aims as the attacks on teachers, libraries, bookstores, authors, drag performers, and trans adults and children across the country.

Many parents of gender-expansive and transgender children realize this: that's why they've signed an open letter saying KOSA would make these kids less safe. They're urging the bill's supporters to reconsider.

To U.S. Senate:

Dear Senators,

By empowering state attorneys general to censor content on the internet if they believe it is harmful to children, the Kids Online Safety Act could be used to censor LGBT+ content on the internet. Republicans have been clear that they would use such a law to ban or restrict content by or about LGBT+ people.

In fact, earlier this month, Sen.

We urge you to block this bill's passage, and find ways to protect American children that do not threaten LGBT+ people's rights.
