FDA: Allow gay and bi men to donate blood and save lives NOW

We're in the middle of a health crisis, but the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) still turns away gay and bi men from donating blood.

Gay and bi men across the U.S. who have gone through weeks of hell with the coronavirus want to help others who are sick with COVID-19.

But when they try donating their blood and plasma they are being told they can't participate if they were sexually active within the last three months – a rule that doesn't exist for straight men.

A few months ago, the FDA revised recommendations on gay and bi men, and other LGBT+ people, on donating blood by reducing the deferral period from 12 months to 3 months – but the rule continues to be based not on facts but on prejudice.

Banning gay and bi men from donating blood puts the lives of many Americans at risk.

Join me today in urging the FDA to finally abandon their discriminating and unscientific policy in order to save lives during the COVID-19 pandemic.

To the U.S. Food & Drug Administration’s (FDA):

Blood centers are still unable to unconditionally accept blood from gay and bisexual men, even though there's a desperate need for blood at U.S. hospitals and a desire to get plasma with antibodies from COVID-19 survivors.

We urge you to drop restrictions on blood donations by gay and bisexual men and to implement these changes NOW to save lives during the COVID-19 pandemic.
