My name is Yaser Abdulrahman. I am a 30-year-old gay man living in Iraq. Since I was a teenager, I have suffered because of my identity. At school, I was mocked and bullied for the way I speak and act. I was forced to leave school after grade 12. I’ve tried to take my own life twice because of the pressure and isolation. For the past 10 years, I’ve been taking medication to cope with severe depression.
Today, my life is still in danger. My family wants to force me to marry a woman. If they discover that I am gay, I could be killed or sent to prison. I live in constant fear. But I know I’m not the only one. Many LGBT+ people in Iraq are hiding, suffering, and praying for a chance to live freely and safely.
I have my own small business and I can prove my identity and situation. But I need help. I’m asking for support from international human rights organizations, embassies, and governments to:
Recognize LGBT+ Iraqis as a vulnerable group in need of emergency protection.
Create safe and legal pathways—such as humanitarian or sponsorship visas—to help us escape.
Put pressure on the Iraqi government to stop the persecution of LGBT+ people.
