Save LGBT+ Lives in Iraq – Help Yaser and Others at Risk

My name is Yaser Abdulrahman. I am a 30-year-old gay man living in Iraq. I face daily threats to my life simply because of who I am. I am not alone

My name is Yaser Abdulrahman. I am a 30-year-old gay man living in Iraq. Since I was a teenager, I have suffered because of my identity. At school, I was mocked and bullied for the way I speak and act. I was forced to leave school after grade 12. I’ve tried to take my own life twice because of the pressure and isolation. For the past 10 years, I’ve been taking medication to cope with severe depression.

Today, my life is still in danger. My family wants to force me to marry a woman. If they discover that I am gay, I could be killed or sent to prison. I live in constant fear. But I know I’m not the only one. Many LGBT+ people in Iraq are hiding, suffering, and praying for a chance to live freely and safely.

I have my own small business and I can prove my identity and situation. But I need help. I’m asking for support from international human rights organizations, embassies, and governments to:

Recognize LGBT+ Iraqis as a vulnerable group in need of emergency protection.
Create safe and legal pathways—such as humanitarian or sponsorship visas—to help us escape.
Put pressure on the Iraqi government to stop the persecution of LGBT+ people.

Please sign and share this petition. Your voice can help save lives. We deserve to live in freedom and dignity, not in fear.

To United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) • European Union Commission on Human Rights • International Organization for Migration (IOM) • Ministers of Immigration of EU member states • Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch:

Dear Respected Authorities and Human Rights Defenders,

My name is Yaser Abdulrahman, a 30-year-old gay man living in Iraq. I am writing this petition not just for myself, but for many LGBT+ individuals in Iraq who are living in constant fear, danger, and isolation simply because of who we are.

We face abuse from our families, rejection from society, and threats from extremist groups. There are no laws that protect us—only fear that silences us. I personally have endured years of bullying, depression, and suicide attempts. Now, my family wants to force me into marriage. If they discover my truth, my life will be over.

I am asking for your urgent action. Please:

Recognize LGBT+ Iraqis as a vulnerable group in need of international protection.
Create and expand humanitarian visa pathways and sponsorship programs for LGBT+ refugees.
Apply diplomatic pressure on the Iraqi government to stop the persecution of LGBT+ people and to recognize our basic rights.

We are human beings who deserve to live in dignity and safety. Please don’t ignore our voices.

Sincerely,

Yaser Abdulrahman
