Florida: Stop Attacking Trans People!

In latest attack on trans people, the Sunshine State banned trans people from being able to update their license to match their gender.

Once again, the Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is taking aim on the trans community and he must be stopped. In the latest rule to target transgender Floridians, they are now banned from even being able to get a driver's license that matches their gender identity.

Even more shocking to me, this new rule wasn't even prompted by any new law. It's just the latest in a cruel and vindictive campaign against trans people in the state of Florida.

Under the new rule, a trans person attempting to update their license to match their gender identity could be accused of "fraud" and "subjects an offender to criminal and civil penalties, including cancellation, suspension, or revocation of his or her driver license".

Being able to take ownership in your identity documents, and making sure they correctly identify who you are as a person, is a powerful affirmation. Trans people shouldn't be denied that simple yet fundamental right.

To Ron DeSantis, Governor and Dave Kerner, Executive Director of Florida's Motor Vehicle Division:

The never ending and baseless assault on trans people in your state must stop. And you can take the first step by reversing this ridiculous and discriminatory rule change that is nothing more than a blatant attack on Florida's trans community. There is no law saying this rule needed to be made and yet, out of cruelty, your administration took this step.

Trans people deserve and need the ability to update their identity documents to match their gender identity. For one, it's a basic right. Second, not having identity documents that match their identity can put trans people at increased risk of harrassment by police but also violence and discrimination. Think about how many times we need to show our ID's - like while showing an ID to buy alochol or go to a bar or while getting on a plane.

This dangerous and unnecessary rule must be revoked immediately.
