The captains of these national teams should wear the ‘real’ rainbow with pride – instead of the fake “One Love” armband!
Ten European football teams want to wear a rainbow-themed captain's armband at the World Cup in Qatar to show solidarity with the LGBT+ community. But instead of wearing the rainbow proudly in front of millions of spectators, the team captains of national teams from Belgium, Denmark, Germany, England, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Wales, Sweden and Switzerland are trying to fool us with a fake rainbow, so they don't upset FIFA and Qatar.
But they can't have it both ways! If they support the LGBT+ community, then say it.
Being LGBT+ in Qatar means facing violence, discrimination, and even imprisonment. Even though the Qatari government promises to turn a blind eye during the World Cup, Qataris, athletes, and visitors who choose to be themselves are all at risk.
We need a sign of solidarity from the participating football teams - but we need it done right!
The "One Love" armband shows a heart with bright colors that are supposed to imitate a rainbow, but look completely fake. To this performative allyship, we pull a yellow card – because human rights are not negotiable! The participating teams must show a backbone and bring the real rainbow to the World Cup in Qatar!
