Demand NYPD & SAPD to denounce participation in and withdraw from UAE Swat events with units accused of war crimes. Let's champion dignity and justice
The New York Police Department (NYPD) and San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) recently participated in the UAE Swat Challenge, a move that has sparked widespread dismay. Why? They stood alongside the Chechen Akhmat Kadyrov special police regiment, a unit implicated in egregious war crimes in Ukraine and human rights abuses in Chechnya, including violence against the LGBT+ community.
On the event’s website, the Dubai police say the goal of the tournament is to “foster an exchange of tactical techniques and skills among international Swat teams”, as well as to “create cooperation between all Swat teams on a global level and for members”
The Chechen regiment's presence at the event, alongside the participation of western law enforcement teams, raises serious ethical questions and concerns about the legitimization of their actions. The competition's alignment with such forces contradicts the values and commitments of the United States to human rights and dignity.
