Rainbow Ban: Hands off our flags – visibility is a right!

Bundestag President Klöckner is deliberately cracking down on queer visibility in parliament – most recently even involving the police. This isn’t an isolated case, it’s part of a dangerous agenda. We say: End this state-organized censorship now!

More than 25,000 people have already called on Bundestag President Julia Klöckner to take a stand for human rights – and raise the rainbow flag at the Bundestag during Berlin Pride. But instead of listening, she chose to escalate.

According to reports from inside parliament, Julia Klöckner has instructed the Bundestag police to enter MPs’ offices and remove all rainbow flags visible from outside. Even staff members have been told to take down flags from their desks.

This isn’t an isolated incident. It’s the next level of a political attack on queer visibility – all in just a few weeks:

- Ban on the rainbow flag for Berlin Pride
- Exclusion of the Bundestag’s queer staff network from official Pride participation
- CDU leader Merz calls the rainbow flag on parliament a “circus tent”
- And now: police raids targeting flags in MPs’ offices

These actions threaten the very principles of our democracy. Queer people have a right to be visible – especially in public institutions. The rainbow flag is a symbol of dignity, equality, and pride. For it to be suppressed by police orders is nothing short of a scandal.

We call on Bundestag President Julia Klöckner to:

- Immediately stop all measures targeting queer visibility in parliament
- Withdraw the police order to remove rainbow flags
- Publicly take a clear stand for the rights of LGBT* people in Germany

If the President of Parliament stays silent, we must raise our voices. Sign the petition now.

To Bundestagspräsidentin Julia Klöckner:

Dear President of the Bundestag, Ms. Klöckner,

We urge you to reconsider your decision and immediately end all measures targeting rainbow flags in the Bundestag.

Deploying the parliamentary police to remove queer symbols from MPs’ offices is not an expression of neutrality – it sends a political message of exclusion. At a time when queer people in Germany are once again coming under pressure, we need a strong and visible commitment to diversity and fundamental rights – not their suppression.

Please put a stop to this dangerous course – and show that queer people are visible and welcome at the heart of our democracy.
