Is the DFB too cowardly to show real solidarity with the LGBT+ community at the World Cup? We demand backbone - wear the rainbow with pride instead of the fake "One Love" armband!
Ten European football teams want to wear a rainbow-themed captain's armband at the World Cup in Qatar to show solidarity with the LGBT+ community. But instead of wearing the rainbow proudly in front of millions of spectators, the German Football Association (DFB) and other teams are trying to fool us with a fake rainbow so as not to step on the toes of the Qatari government.
Homosexuality is still a crime in Qatar, punishable by three to five years in prison - and even the death penalty under Sharia law. It is also illegal to stand up for LGBT+ rights or to carry a rainbow flag. Even though the Qatari government promises to turn a blind eye during the World Cup, Qataris, athletes, and visitors who openly profess to be queer or simply speak out in favour of the LGBT+ community run the risk of being arrested and charged.
We need a sign of solidarity from the participating football teams - but we need it done right!
The "One Love" armband shows a heart with bright colours that are supposed to imitate a rainbow, but look completely fake. On it is the inscription "One Love". The DFB and the other participating football clubs wanted to keep the LGBT+ community quiet without upsetting FIFA and the government in Qatar?
We show the DFB the yellow card, because human rights are not negotiable. The DFB must show backbone and bring the real rainbow to the World Cup in Qatar.
