Justice for the tragic murder of trans woman Abuja Area Mama! Without justice, there will be no end to rising violence against LGBT+ in Nigeria. SIGN
LGBTQ+ activists in Nigeria are urgently sounding the alarm over the escalating violence following the tragic murder of our beloved friend, Abuja Area Mama.
Our trans sister was found dead by the roadside with a gunshot wound to the head. Area Mama’s killing has sparked serious fears about a surge in attacks against our community. Following the signing of the Samoa Agreement by Nigerian authorities in June, a wave of misinformation spread, stirring up hatred and fueling increased homophobic violence.
In recent weeks, we have witnessed a disturbing rise in lynchings of trans individuals, including two in Kogi State just days before Area Mama's death. This surge reflects a growing climate of hatred, intensified by government policies and hate speech, that threaten our very existence.
We fear that without immediate action, these violent acts will continue.
While the police have launched an investigation into Area Mama's murder, the ongoing lack of accountability for these crimes has left many of us feeling vulnerable and fearful for our lives.
Inaction will only encourage further violence, and we need immediate support to protect our rights and lives. As the threats intensify, we urge everyone to stand with us in demanding justice for Area Mama and all members of our community.
