Hungary: Stop stigmatizing books on marginalized groups

Hungary's government ordered Labrisz Lesbian Association to “fully inform customers” of the book presenting “non-traditional gender roles”.

In September 2020, Labrisz Lesbian Association published "Fairyland Is for Everyone", an extremely popular storybook, aiming to teach children to be respectful of people of all backgrounds.

The book features a tale of a doe who is granted a wish to become a buck, and a poem about a prince who marries another prince. Other stories depict minorities and disadvantaged social groups in a positive light, including Romani, poor, elderly and disabled people, and present important social issues such as poverty, child adoption, domestic violence, and the diversity of gendered expressions and behaviours.

After the launch, the book was fiercely attacked by a far-right politician, who shredded it at a press conference, and prime minister Viktor Orbán said, “there is a red line that homosexuals should not cross. Leave our children alone”. Public attacks against the book included right-wing media furor, a petition to ban the book, far-right demonstrations and verbal insults against Labrisz, verbal and physical attacks against bookshops and shop assistants selling the book. The book, however, sold out in record numbers, becoming one of the bestsellers in the Hungarian book market in 2020, and it was positively acclaimed by many professionals.

Now, based on an individual complaint submitted to the Hungarian Consumer Protection Authority, it has ordered Labrisz to print disclaimers warning customers that "Fairyland Is for Everyone" contains "behaviour inconsistent with traditional gender roles". The Authority did not explain what they refer to as “non-traditional gender roles” or why they believe this threatens customers.

This absurd obligation aiming at stigmatizing books depicting social diversity is discriminatory and tries to restrict the freedom of expression which is guaranteed by the Hungarian Fundamental Law.

Clearly, it is politically motivated and part of the anti-LGBT+ crusade the Hungarian government has been waging.

We are ready to fight back, but we need your support.

To Hungarian Consumer Protection Authority (E-mail: [email protected]):

Restricting or attempting to restrict the display of a “pattern of behaviour deviating from traditional gender roles” goes against the freedom of expression and the prohibition of discrimination, both guaranteed by the Hungarian Fundamental Law. Besides, it is absurd to consider the depiction of “non-traditional gender roles” a threat which customers should be warned of in advance. Conservative views which disapprove of social change and cling to traditional gender roles and gendered power imbalance have no place in consumer protection.
