Sign now to demand immediate changes to the new immigration rule in Brazil that puts LGBT+ refugees at risk!
A recent update in Brazilian immigration policy could close the country’s doors to refugees fleeing threats in their countries of origin. From now on, no immigrant without a visa can remain in the country: in other words, a refugee arriving in Brazil to seek asylum could be immediately sent back to a situation of extreme danger.
The measure applies to countries that require a visa to enter Brazil, including more than 40 countries that criminalize the existence of LGBT+ people, such as Afghanistan, Libya , Morocco , Iran, Iraq, Algeria, Burkina Faso, egypt and Uganda.
The risk is clear: it could end the principle of non-refoulement, meaning not sending a refugee back to a zone of immense danger. Imagine being forced to return to a country where your very existence is punished by death. The Public Defender’s Office is already raising its voice and calling for immediate changes to the new policy!
Reina Malak Elhamidy, founder of MENA-T Brazil, says: "Brazil gave me home and hope after fleeing Morocco for fear of persecution due to my visible advocacy work, being who I am, a transwoman, a human being … I am worried and concerned about the impact these laws will have on my community in the MENA region".
In recent years, Brazil has been a beacon of hope for LGBT+ refugees who, after long and arduous journeys, found a place of refuge where they could be who they are and love who they love. We cannot afford any setbacks!
