Chinese LGBTQ+ communities are facing an alarming surge in online hate speech, glorifying violence and spreading dehumanizing narratives.
Across the Chinese internet, LGBTQ+ communities are under growing threat. Hate speech targeting sexual and gender minorities has surged in recent years, spreading unchecked and growing more extreme by the day. Alarmingly, in some online spaces, this hatred now echoes fascist and genocidal rhetoric.
On Baidu Tieba, one of China’s largest forum platforms, a group named after calls for violence against gay people(Kill Gays) has attracted tens of thousands of active users. On Weibo, a major social media platform, accounts that regularly post extreme anti-LGBTQ+ content have gained hundreds of thousands of followers—with no moderation, no penalties, and no accountability.
Just a few years ago, there was a brief period when LGBTQ+ voices in China had a small but visible space online. Community accounts, queer artists, and activists could express themselves cautiously—rainbow flags could still appear in some public posts. But that fragile visibility is now rapidly disappearing.
In 2025, the popular LGBTQ+ account “同志之声” (Voice of Gays) on Weibo was forced to change its name, scrubbing references to queer identity. Posts containing rainbow flags are routinely censored. Public expressions of LGBTQ+ pride have become virtually impossible.
Even worse, homophobic and transphobic rhetoric is now not only tolerated but openly embraced. Wang Hailin, a well-known screenwriter and public figure in China, recently made posts on Weibo calling for violent actions against LGBTQ+ people. Instead of being condemned, he was celebrated by thousands of supporters.
Jin Xing, the only known trans performer who dared to raise a rainbow flag during a show was completely banned from all platforms and subjected to horrific online harassment. No protections, no consequences—only silence.
We call on the global community to take this seriously. The Chinese LGBTQ+ community is facing a digital erasure fueled by hate, censorship, and complicity.
We are asking international human rights organizations, tech platforms, and allies to:
Monitor and report on this growing wave of online hate and erasure,
Demand accountability from platforms hosting anti-LGBTQ+ content in Chinese-language spaces,
Support and protect queer voices and creators facing systemic suppression.
Please sign this petition to raise awareness, push for accountability, and show solidarity with LGBTQ+ people in China. Hate cannot go unchallenged.
