Stop the harm! Urge Kenya's Inter-Religious Council to denounce brutal "conversion practices" harming LGBT+ lives. Sign to protect dignity and rights!
Across Kenya, LGBT+ individuals continue to face immense pressure to undergo so-called “conversion practices” — interventions falsely claiming to change or “cure” their sexual orientation or gender identity. These practices, often promoted under the guise of religious doctrine or spiritual guidance, are rooted in the erroneous belief that LGBT+ identities are unnatural, sinful, and morally wrong.
Further, there is no scientific or medical basis for these practices. On the contrary, they have been widely condemned by leading mental health and human rights organizations across the globe for causing profound psychological, emotional, and sometimes physical harm. Victims of these practices often suffer long-term trauma, depression, and alienation.
As the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya (IRCK) represents a collective of faith communities, it holds a powerful platform to influence societal attitudes and promote values of compassion, inclusion, and justice. Therefore, the council has a role in ensuring religious spaces are sanctuaries of love and support — not sources of shame, fear, and coercion.
We, the Cosmopolitan Affirming Community, call on the IRCK to join other international religious and interfaith bodies in publicly condemning “conversion practices” and to affirm the right of every individual — including LGBT+ people — to live with dignity, authenticity, and freedom from discrimination and violence.
