LGBT+ activists attacked in Paraguay

Pride in Hernandarias, Paraguay was banned. Activists who defied the ban were attacked with rocks, eggs, and firecrackers.

Rubén Rojas, the mayor of Hernandarias, had recently declared the city as "pro-life and pro-family" and banned Pride as "a way to protect the rights of the majority."

All Out's partners at Somosgay together with local group DIVERSXS – a team coordinated by Amnesty International Paraguay, It Gets Better Paraguay, and REPADIS – defied the ban and marched anyway.

But anti-LGBT+ hate groups were waiting for them with rocks, eggs, and even firecrackers. They tried to run activists over with their cars. They burned the marchers' rainbow flags.

Police did nothing to protect the activists, and the mayor even tried to blame them for the violence.

TO: Councilpeople of Hernandarias and Paraguayan authorities

The mayor of Hernandarias claims to be protecting the rights of citizens by banning Pride in the city. But the LGBT+ activists that were attacked violently are citizens too, with the same set of rights.

Therefore, we demand that you:
• Repeal completely resolution 3076/19 – that states that Hernandarias is a "pro-life and pro-family" municipality;
• Oversee future actions of Mayor Rojas to make sure there are no further human rights violations or violent attacks on LGBT+ citizens.
